Version 1.4.0 was our big feature release — WooCommerce translation, translated slugs, exclude words. But the 16 point releases that followed are where the plugin really got polished.
This post covers every quality-of-life improvement we shipped from v1.4.1 through v1.4.16. No new headline features — just making the existing ones faster, smoother, and less annoying to use.
Batch Translation: 20x Faster
This is the biggest change you’ll feel. Before v1.4.16, translating a large Gutenberg page with 70+ content blocks meant 66 individual API calls — one per block. It took about 2 minutes.
Now the plugin uses intelligent batch splitting. It reads the words_remaining value from the server response, splits content into optimally-sized sub-batches, and sends them via the batch API. A page that used to take 2 minutes now finishes in about 6 seconds.

The 1-by-1 fallback still exists as a safety net, but you shouldn’t hit it under normal conditions.
Inline Save & Reset Buttons
The Settings page used to have a single Save button at the bottom. If you changed one toggle at the top, you had to scroll past WooCommerce settings, SEO options, cache config, and debug tools to hit Save.
Now each settings group has its own Save button right where you made the change. We also added Reset to Defaults buttons per section:
- Reset Switcher Defaults— restores language switcher style, position, and flags
- Reset Cache/Pages/SEO Defaults— restores cache duration, page status, and SEO toggles
- Reset WooCommerce Defaults— restores product translation settings
Reset updates the form fields in your browser — click Save to persist the changes.
Disable Language Switcher (Without Losing Settings)
A lot of users handle language switching through their own custom menu, navigation bar, or theme integration. They don’t need the floating switcher or shortcode — but previously there was no clean way to turn it off.
Now there’s an Enable Language Switcher checkbox in Settings → Language Switcher. Uncheck it and the floating switcher, shortcode output, and menu integration all disappear. Your style, position, and flag settings stay saved — re-enabling brings everything back exactly as it was.
Default Language URL Prefix
By default, the built-in language system serves your default language at the root URL ( /about/) and adds prefixes only for secondary languages ( /fr/about/).
A new toggle lets you add a prefix to the default language too: /en/about/. When enabled, unprefixed URLs are automatically 301-redirected to their prefixed version, and the homepage redirects to /en/.
Note: This setting only applies to the built-in language system, not Polylang or WPML.
Automatic Taxonomy Term Translation
Category and tag names are now automatically translated as part of the normal page/product translation flow. No extra step needed.
Translated names are stored as WordPress term meta and automatically displayed in the visitor’s current language on the frontend. If a translation isn’t available for a particular language, the original name is shown as a fallback.
This works for regular post categories and tags as well as WooCommerce product categories and tags.
Translated URL Slugs
Your German translation of /services/ now lives at /de/dienstleistungen/ instead of /de/services/. Better for SEO, better for users who expect URLs in their own language.
Exclude Words & Glossary
Brand names, product codes, technical terms — some words should never be translated. The Exclude Words tab in Settings lets you manage a list of protected terms, with regex support for pattern matching.
The Glossary feature goes the other direction: define preferred translations for specific terms as term:translation pairs, with support for language-specific glossaries.
Everything Else
Plenty of smaller fixes add up across 16 point releases:
- Fixed paid users seeing false “Monthly Limit Reached” notices — usage reporting now sends the actual license key
- Free users get clear single-language selection with upgrade prompts instead of confusing multi-language UI
- Editor metabox shows a helpful setup message with dashboard link when no multilingual plugin is configured
- Removed unnecessary Elementor and multilingual plugin dependency notices
- Fixed checkbox alignment and visibility in admin settings and Translate All view
- Added review prompt after successful translations
- SEO translation improvements: better hreflang handling, Open Graph and Twitter Card tag reliability
- Theme auto-detection expanded to 20+ popular themes including Astra, Divi, Avada, OceanWP, GeneratePress, and Neve
Version 1.4.16 is available now. If you’re running any earlier v1.4.x, update to get the batch performance boost alone — it’s the single biggest speed improvement we’ve shipped.
